Preparing for Minor Knee Surgery
Knee arthroscopy, meniscectomy, loose body removal, simple cartilage procedures
Outpatient arthroscopic procedures with a quick recovery. Most patients walk the same day and need only a short period of support.
Have These at Home Before Surgery
Set these up ahead of time so they're waiting for you when you get home.
Ice system
Icing is the key to controlling swelling the first week. Large gel packs work; a cold therapy machine (Iceman-style cooler) is easier to use consistently.
Shop on AmazonPost-op bandage supplies
Sterile gauze pads and large waterproof adhesive dressings for covering incisions once the surgical dressing comes off.
Shop on AmazonPain & clot-prevention medications
Have your prescriptions filled BEFORE surgery day. If our team recommends aspirin for clot prevention, have it on hand — the dose will be in your pre-op instructions.
Prescription pain medication must be filled at your pharmacy — it cannot be purchased online.
Shop on AmazonBring These on Surgery Day
Pack these the night before and bring them to the surgery center.
Crutches
You'll need crutches for comfort the first days after surgery. Adjustable aluminum crutches are inexpensive and work well.
Shop on AmazonLoose shorts or sweatpants
Wear or bring loose-fitting bottoms that fit easily over a bulky knee dressing.
Set Up Physical Therapy
Schedule your first physical therapy visit before your surgery date — therapy typically starts within the first week after surgery. Enter your ZIP code to find a PT provider we recommend near you.
PT Directory Coming Soon
We're building our directory of preferred physical therapy providers. In the meantime, call our team at 410-268-4717 and we'll recommend a PT practice near you for your procedure.
Optional — Nice to Have
Not required, but many patients find these make recovery more comfortable.
Shower chair
Makes showering safer and easier while your knee is stiff and you're keeping the dressing dry.
Shop on AmazonScar care (silicone, vitamin E, or Mederma)
Once incisions are fully healed, scar treatment can improve the final appearance. Start only after our team clears you.
