About

Dr. Benjamin M. Petre

Board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist dedicated to getting athletes and active people back in the game.

Philosophy

Dr. Petre's practice is built on one principle: a team approach to getting you back in the game. His practice is focused on the surgical treatment of sports injuries, with deep expertise in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery for the knee, hip, shoulder, and elbow. Whether you're a professional athlete, a weekend warrior, or an active person who wants to stay that way, Dr. Petre and his team are here to help.

When you come to Dr. Petre, you don't just see a surgeon. You work with an entire team dedicated to your care — physician assistants, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, surgery schedulers, and research staff. This team approach ensures continuity from your first office visit through surgery and rehabilitation.

Not every injury requires surgery. Dr. Petre's PA and NP team also provides comprehensive non-surgical care including injections, physical therapy guidance, bracing, and other conservative treatments to help you recover without an operation.

Note: Our practice is focused exclusively on sports medicine and sports injury surgery. We do not treat arthritis or perform joint replacement surgery.

Background & Training

Dr. Petre completed his fellowship in sports medicine at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado — one of the most prestigious sports medicine practices in the world — where he trained alongside surgeons who care for Olympic, professional, and elite athletes. During his fellowship, he also served as a team physician for the US Ski Team and US Snowboard Team, and provided surgical coverage at Vail Valley Medical Center.

Prior to his fellowship, Dr. Petre completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was selected by his peers and faculty as Administrative Chief Resident and received the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma award for Best Orthopaedic Teaching Resident. He earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where he served as class Vice President.

Before medical school, Dr. Petre spent two years as a research assistant at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Cell Biology, where he performed high-resolution electron microscopy research on proteins implicated in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, publishing in journals including Cell and Nature. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Colgate University.

Research & Publications

Dr. Petre has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications spanning sports medicine, hip arthroscopy, rotator cuff surgery, ACL reconstruction biomechanics, and molecular biology. His research program at Luminis Health has focused on outcomes in hip arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, and the impact of patient factors on surgical results. He is also the author of Emergencies in Orthopaedics (Oxford University Press).

Outside the Office

When he's not in the operating room, Dr. Petre is usually on the move. He lives in the Annapolis area with his wife and three children. An athlete himself, he stays active through his own sports and loves cheering on his kids in theirs. The family enjoys skiing, hiking, boating on the Chesapeake and local waterways, and spending time outdoors together.
